Is
Movie Archive Solutions a transfer mill?
No, we are not a "transfer mill" and we're not in this business to make lot's of money off your treasures.
We take pride in giving your movies individual and undivided attention.

What kind of film/tape (formats) can Movie Archive Solutions transfer?
We can process 8mm, Super8mm and 16mm film (16mm by special request only, please contact us).
We can process VHS, VHS-C, SVHS, 8mm, Hi-8, Digital-8, MiniDV and DVCAM.
At this time we don't offer transfers from the Micro MV format as it is new and not in widespread use.
We also don't work with the Beta formats.
Contact us if this is what you have, we can lead you in the right direction.

What do you do with the movies when you get them?
The first thing we do is enter your project into our production schedule.
We will process all the film/tape you send us together. We do this to dedicate our time to you.
Once we start on your films, they are our only concern until they're done.
When we start your project we first do a test run on each film/tape
and make sure we can give you the best finished product possible.

We will contact you by email or phone if there are any issues with your movies.
Then we will either transfer your movie to a hard disk video recorder or MiniDV tape.
This is when we do things like color correcting and quality enhancments.
The very last thing we do is "burn" the DVDs or record tapes.
After the finished DVD / Tape passes qulaity control, labels are made and applied.

What options are there?
We offer many options to enhance the sound and appearance of your movies.
Colorizations are not one of them! Ted Turner is the person to see if you want B/W movies turned to color!
Ok, seriously...
Color correction - video noise reduction, brightness and color.
Audio enhancing - noise reduction, volume leveling and Dolby Pro Logic recording.
MiniDv archive tape - A digital master tape of your movies, higher image quality
than a DVD, perfect size for a safe deposit box or fire safe.

Inkjet printed labels - We can print a label on the DVD with a name, index or contents.
Please see the Services & Pricing page for a full list and feel free to contact us for more info.

What kind of picture quality can I expect on the finished DVD?
Picture quality is a difficult subject when it comes to the copying of images from one format to another.
Here is a scale to show how different formats compare.
BAD: VHS, 8 >Hi8, SVHS >Digital8 > DVD >Mini DV, DVCAM >8mm film :BEST
It comes down to a little thing called LInes of Horizontal Resolution.
A VHS tape displays 240 LHR, a DVD does up to 500, a MiniDV tape up to 530.
Modern television can display 600 or better.
Film will always be (at least in the forseable future) the best image possible,
because Horizontal Resolution doesn't apply.
That's why movie theaters still use film projectors.
(Unless you're George Lucas or have access to SONY's incredible digital projection system!)
When we transfer film, we record it at 530 lines of resolution then "burn" it to DVD.
What we offer is a digital copy, in the best available viewing format (DVD) of your movie.
Also, we can provide archive quality DV tapes, which have a better resolution than DVD,
that can be used to create additional DVDs or tapes in the event that your original is damaged or lost.
Because of the image quality issues with VHS, we recommend that you have your movies put on DVD.
You can buy really affordable DVD players for the same price as a high quality 4 head vcr.
And DVD players don't have clocks to set!
DVDs that we produce for you should be compatible with 99% of the DVD players made in the last 2 years.

When can I expect to get my transfered movies back?
We will start production on your films / tapes as soon as your payment is cleared with our bank.
Usually, we can have your project completed and returned to you within 2-3 weeks.
Because of the extra time we put into film, it might take longer to recieve your movies back.
We will make every effort to contact you either by email or phone and give you and estimated completion date.
If you need to have your films / tapes transfered and returned to you by a certain date,
please contact us before sending your films / tapes.

What do I do with my original films when I get them back?
The first thing you should do is place them in a fire safe or safe deposit box in your bank.
If you don't have enough room for the film reels, consider buying a MiniDV archive tape.
NEVER THROW OUT FILM. Keep it in a cool dry place.
